Dear Community,

Welcome to the first edition of the MJE Nachas Newsly, our new newsletter for MJE supporters. As a valued partner and member of our community, we want to keep you posted on the exciting things happening here at MJE. I hope you take pride in knowing you have made the following accomplishments possible!

Sincerely,
Rabbi Mark Wildes
MJE SUCCESSES OCTOBER 2016

HIGH HOLIDAYS

We had an increase of 5% in overall numbers at MJE’s three sites for High Holidays Services and Rosh HaShana Dinners going from 1085 attendees in 2015 to this year’s 1141. Our unique participants grew by 6% from 786 to 829.
Downtown MJE even had a celebrity join them for services – Debra Messing  of “Will and Grace” came with her soon to be Bar Mitzva’d son, Roman.

SUKKOT & SIMCHAT TORAH

We sold 69 sets of Arba Minim (Lulavs and Etrogs) with 65% of them going to “first time buyers”. This is up from 31 sets in 2015.

35 participants joined the Wildes and Rosenthal families for an inspirational Shabbaton with the community in Lawrence, Long Island on Chol HaMoed Succot. This is up from 19 participants who joined in 2015. For one of the participants, Or Levy, it was his very first Shabbat experience which he said was wonderful.

We did not think we could top last year’s Simchat Torah experience or numbers at MJE but we did! MJE had 944 participants register for the Simchat Torah party at night (compared to 919 from last year) and 400 registered for Simchat Torah Day Service/Auction (compared to 364 the year before). All in, over 1500 participants danced, celebrated, prayed and learned Torah on a weekday holiday! Our Simchat Torah Day Auction netted us $62,000 compared to last year’s $48,000.

LAUNCH OF WOMEN’S LEARNING SERIES!

On Oct 31, MJE launched its first ever dedicated weekly Torah class for women, by women, about Jewish women. The class is taught by MJE’s new Director of Education, Ruthie Braffman. 20 young MJE women participants attended the first class and shared their thoughts on what they love about being a Jewish woman, where they struggle and what Jewish women they truly admire. Michael Doppelt has generously sponsored the series in memory of his grandparents Ricky and Irving Doppelt Z”L. He opened the class by sharing memories of them and their dedication to Jewish learning.

CONVERSATIONS REMIX WITH RABBI MARK WILDES
Election Series!

What Halloween Parade? On a night when millennials could be watching horror movies or dressing up for the Halloween parade, over 120 young Jewish professionals picked MJE as the place to be.

Part 1 of our “Election 2016:Jewish Issues” featured MJE fellow and Hillary Clinton delegate Stephanie Hausner and Part 2 featured Donald Trump’s Israel advisor, David Friedman. Both guests appeared in interview with Rabbi Mark Wildes, followed by an interactive Q&A with the audience.
MJE felt it was important to inform its many participants on the policies of each candidate that affect the Jewish community and specifically the State of Israel. The forum provided a space to engage in a healthy and respectful dialogue as part of the democratic process.
